Paddleboarders take on Kaiwi

A record field of the best paddleboarders and stand-up paddlers will compete Sunday in the 14th Molokai2Oahu Paddleboard World Championship, a 32-mile trek across the Kaiwi Channel from Kaluakoi, Molokai, to Maunalua Bay, Oahu.

The race has become so popular, entries closed a month ago at more than 140. It’s so trendy, it has its own clothes line: M2O.

Among the entries is veteran waterman Todd Bradley, making his 53rd crossing (including Molokai Hoe outrigger canoe races). Bradley. Also, Jenny Kalmbach is in the solo SUP division weeks after completing the 72-mile, 16-hour paddle (with Morgan Hoestery) across the Kauai Channel.

Australia’s Jaime Mitchell (4:58:25) is going for his ninth consecutive win. He holds four of the top 10 race times, including the 4:48:23 that set the record in 2007.—Molokai2Oahu.com

Spearfishing event big help to many

The second annual Triple Crown of Spearfishing tournament will be held July 31 at Kahe Park Pavilion.

The event, located at Electric Beach (across from the electric power plant), helps remove invasive fish from the reefs and benefits Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Hawaii.

Last year, 60 teams competed and removed hundreds of invasive fish from the reefs, according to Kris Tyler, event organizer.—westsidespearfishing.com
