Oak Hill does it

It was Oaktown versus Oak Hill.

For the seventh time, the Warriors were kings. Dwayne Bacon overcame a sore fibula and a bad cold to score 14 points as Oak Hill (Va.) rallied past Bishop O’Dowd (Calif.) 58-49 in the final of the ‘Iolani Classic on Saturday night.

Oak Hill, of Mouth of Wilson, entered the tourney ranked No. 3 in the USA Today Super 25. Bishop O’Dowd was ranked No. 11. For much of the way, it looked like the Dragons’ night to shine. 

Oak Hill’s seventh crown required a big defensive effort from its massive front court. They managed to get the Dragons’ 6-foot-11 center, Ivan Rabb, off the court after he picked up fouls in the second quarter. Rabb, who has Kentucky among his final five choices, finished with 25 points on 9-for-15 shooting from the field. He was also 7-for-8 from the foul line, hauled in nine boards, blocked three shots and was named the tournament’s most outstanding player. 

"We definitely played well. Of course, we didn’t come here to lose. Their strength didn’t bother me at all, but I got into foul trouble," Rabb said. 

"He’s awfully good," Oak Hill coach Steve Smith said. "But we’ve got three or four big guys. We were trying to attack him and get Bacon involved." 

Bacon shot just 4-for-18, but his relentless attacks at the rim put pressure on the Dragons. He scored six key points during Oak Hill’s final push. 

"(Rabb) is a top-five player and he’s a very good big," Bacon said. "We kept going at him."

Cami Aquinaldo scored a game-high 14 points as the Raiders defeated the Warriors. Nikiala Maio led Kamehameha with 10 points.
