Maryknoll had already secured its place atop the ILH girls basketball standings before crossing Wilder Avenue for Saturday’s regular-season finale at Punahou.

But even with a state tournament berth safely tucked away, the fourth-ranked Spartans entered Hemmeter Fieldhouse with ample motivation and completed a perfect regular season with a 42-28 win over the host Buffanblu.

"Anytime you play a quality program like Punahou, you want to come out and give your best," Maryknoll coach Chico Furtado said.

"We were going to come out hard and execute our game plan and the kids did a great job."

Maryknoll (10-0) clinched the ILH Division I regular-season title and a berth in the state tournament with its win over Sacred Hearts on Tuesday. The Spartans will be the top seed in the upcoming league tournament. If a team other than Maryknoll wins the tournament, a playoff will determine the ILH’s overall champion.

The Spartans have a bye in the first round of the tournament and play the winner of Thursday’s game between ‘Iolani and Mid-Pacific on Saturday.

Maryknoll center Maegen Martin, one of two senior captains on a roster that includes seven freshmen, scored a game-high 11 points and Alexis Delovio provided balance in the backcourt with nine points.

Martin said the prospect of finishing off an undefeated run through the regular season "gave us the drive to win tonight."

"It gave us the confidence to know we can keep up with teams like this and that it’s just going to be like this from now, and today was the start," Martin said.

Punahou (7-3) entered its senior-night game secure in second place and will use the next week to recharge heading into the tournament. Another runner-up finish or better in the ILH tournament gives the Buffanblu the league’s second state tournament berth. But the Buffanblu aren’t looking past Saturday’s matchup with Kamehameha or Sacred Hearts.

"One of the biggest things is to get our kids healthy and give them kind of a break," Punahou coach Kevin Velasco said. "We got out of finals, so just physically just give some time to heal their bodies and hopefully we can come back and play well."

After a low-scoring first quarter, Maryknoll — which edged Punahou 47-46 on Jan. 8 — took control with a 13-2 run in the second. Martin’s first two baskets of the game ignited the spurt and Maryknoll took a 17-11 lead into halftime.

Punahou was led by its post duo of Tyra Moe (nine points) and Vae Maulafu (seven points). But the Spartans managed to contain them for much of the game and pulled away in the fourth quarter.

Maryknoll’s lead hovered between five and seven points before Ysabelle Halemano drained a 3-pointer to give the Spartans a 35-25 lead with 2:20 left.

"We won a few close ones along the way, but I see us getting better," Furtado said of the Spartans’ progress. "We’re 10-0 and we’ve still got room for improvement. 

"Once we clean some of that up, hopefully within the next couple of weeks, we’ll be able to compete with anybody."
