Kaiser built a lead from the perimeter then protected it in the paint.
The Cougars’ hit five 3-pointers in the first half of Thursday’s matchup against Farrington and center Chance Kalaugher powered their attack in the fourth quarter and Division II Kaiser knocked off the ninth-ranked Governors 58-48.
Kelsey Lewis II drained three shots from long range and Keoua Mahiko hit two more to help Kaiser open up a 26-20 lead at halftime. The lead swelled to 16 in the fourth quarter before Farrington closed to within six with 2:53 left. But the Cougars answered each Farrington push to hang on and improved to 6-3 in the OIA East.
"I thought we played a pretty complete game," Kaiser coach Branden Kawazoe said.
"It was a tale of two halves. The first half we were settling for a lot of outside jump shots and I knew coming down the stretch when it becomes a game of possessions and grinding things out we had to establish an inside presence."
Having Kalaugher, a sturdy 6-foot-5 junior, certainly goes a long way toward accomplishing that task.
Limited by foul trouble for much of the first half, Kalaugher scored 11 of his game-high 17 points in the fourth quarter, punctuating the win with a breakaway dunk.
"I know all the teams we play, they’re trying to get me out of the game, so I have to find other ways, I have to change my game to get around that," said Kalaugher, who also grabbed 11 rebounds.
Mahiko finished with 16 points, including six in the fourth period to help the Cougars maintain separation.
Tua Unutoa led Farrington (5-4) with 16 tough points in the paint and Jake Smith scored nine of his 11 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Governors’ comeback. But Kaiser was able to answer when Farrington threatened late.
"The situation is we have to play in the first quarter and second quarter like we did in the fourth quarter," Farrington coach Allan Silva said.
"We were behind, we were chasing and I told them ‘let’s go get this game.’ Kaiser played a very good game. We didn’t play our best game but I credit them, they played well."
While Kalaugher played limited minutes in the first half, Kaiser got a boost from Lewis, who scored 13 points in his most extensive playing time since suffering an ankle injury in the season opener on Jan. 3.
His first 3-pointer gave Kaiser a 13-12 lead late in the first quarter and the Cougars didn’t trail the rest of the way. He added two more in the second quarter, the second coming after Farrington had closed to within two.
"It was real nice," Lewis said. "It was my first time back being 100 percent. Coach told me just try to get into the flow of the game, don’t force anything. My teammates did a god job, they took pressure off of me and got me open looks."
