The addition last week of Cal Baptist as the 10th member in the Pacific West Conference is more than just an expansion of the number of schools. It also expands the possibilities of additional sports that will compete for an NCAA Division II championship.
The PacWest currently has 10 core sports that all members offer, five in fall (women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s soccer and cross country); two in winter (men’s and women’s basketball) and three in spring (softball, men’s golf and women’s tennis). Baseball joins the spring mix beginning this season, with men’s tennis and women’s golf given tentative approval to be added to the spring schedule as early as the 2011-12 school year.
Continued growth is a given, according to PacWest commissioner Bob Hogue.
He just returned from the Division II commissioners’ meeting in Arizona and "based on what has happened at the Division I level, we want to make sure it doesn’t happen at D-II," Hogue said of the recent movement of teams to different conferences.
"There is ongoing discussion about future expansion (in the PacWest), and we’ve talked about other numbers beyond 10."
The addition of Cal Baptist, a longtime power in the NAIA, not only opens the doors to expansion in southern California — Cal Baptist is in Riverside, Calif. — it also has PacWest schools looking at some of the sports sponsored by the Lancers.
One is men’s volleyball, a sport once offered by Brigham Young-Hawaii and Hawaii Pacific.
Grand Canyon also offers men’s volleyball, and Hogue said several schools have expressed interest in adding it as well as women’s sand volleyball. Although Hogue said there has been no discussion with the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation — the University of Hawaii’s conference for men’s volleyball — he said that the NCAA men’s volleyball representative will be making a presentation to the PacWest at the NCAA convention in January.
"It’s an exciting time for us," Hogue said.
Men’s volleyball has 22 teams at the combined Division I and II levels.

Chaminade, Dominican tie
Goals by Jon Fukumoto and Nick Ogata gave Chaminade a 2-1 halftime lead, but the Silverswords could not hold on, settling for a 2-2 double-overtime draw in a PacWest men’s soccer match yesterday at Saint Louis field.
Goalie Hayes Sperry made seven saves for Chaminade (1-8-1, 0-7-1) against the Penguins (2-8-3, 2-5-2).
» Hawaii-Hilo played Notre Dame de Namur, which had won six in a row, to a scoreless tie in men’s soccer yesterday in Hilo.
Both teams had five shots on goal in the defensive battle. Isiah Castro of the Argonauts and Dane Kaylor of the Vulcans (5-4-2, 4-3-2) recorded the shutouts.

Parker’s goal helps Hilo win
Kelly Parker’s goal gave Hawaii-Hilo a 1-0 women’s soccer win over Notre Dame de Namur (Belmont, Calif.) yesterday in Hilo.
Chelsea Gomez assisted on the goal for the Vulcans (6-6-1, 5-4). Alysia Ann Barone made seven saves for the shutout.
» Bridget Folan scored in the 32nd minute and Mary Wheeler in the 73rd to lead Dominican over Chaminade 2-0 at Saint Louis field.
Goalie Marissa Minor had 10 saves for the Silverswords (2-8, 2-6) against the Penguins (5-5-1, 4-4-1).
BYUH’s Aiono earns honor
BYU-Hawaii senior midfielder Natasha Aiono earned weekly honors after helping the Seasiders go 3-0-0 last week, scoring three goals and an assist. She had both goals in the 2-0 victory over Dominican.
