Moanalua boys, Campbell girls make statements

Mililani’s Zachary Diamond pinned Baylen Cooper of Pearl City late in the third period to win the 138-pound bracket of the Hawaii Wrestling Officials Association Scholarship Tournament at Leilehua on Saturday night.

Diamond, who is the top-ranked boy in the pound-for-pound rankings on Hawaiiprepworld.com, stuck Cooper after 5 minutes, 23 seconds.

Moanalua won the boys team title over Lahainaluna in the first test of team strength and a preview of the state tournament.

No. 2 Liam Corbett of Leilehua pinned Tyler Yoshikawa of Pac-Five in 3:55 to win the 152-pound class.

Other winners in the top 10 were: No. 4 Tristan Ludiazo of Campbell with a narrow 4-3 score over Lahainaluna’s Connor Mowat; No. 5 Chance Ikei of Kaiser, who pinned Moanalua’s Chevy Tabiolo Felicilda in 3:32 to win the 132 class; No. 6 Cameron Kato of Punahou with a 13-3 win over rival Cody Cabanban of Saint Louis at 113 pounds; No. 7 Blaysen Terukina of Kamehameha with a 7-2 victory over ‘Iolani’s Jordan Ng 7-2 at 120 pounds; and No. 8 Brian Pascua of ‘Iolani with a pin over Pearl City’s Trevor Alvarado in 4:47 to take the 145-pound class.

No. 3 Christian Balagso of Lahainaluna placed third at 120 pounds.

Other winners were Jason Pagurayan of Kapolei (106), Shandon Ilaban Totten of Kapolei (126), Christian Lee of Mililani (160), Thomas Rosen St. John of Lahainaluna (170), Maui Lee of Pearl City (182), Joseph Hoshino of Kamehameha (195) and James Sullivan of Campbell (220).

Hokupaa Kahookaulana of Keaau and Rodman Salangdron of Kapolei both had four pins in the tournament.

Alos dominate

No. 1 Teshya Alo of Kamehameha had no trouble repeating in the tournament, pinning No. 4 Breanna Dudoit Vasquez of Lahainaluna in 2:42 to win at 138 pounds.

No. 8 Taniya Alo of ‘Iolani, Teshya’s younger sister, won the 127-pound title with a pin in just 47 seconds over No. 5 Asia Lien Evans of Pearl City.

State champion Kalissa Pundyke of Campbell, who is ranked No. 6, pinned Lahainaluna’s Iverly Navarro in 1:02 to take the 102-pound class, and her teammate, No. 9 Angela Peralta, beat Aiea’s Kari Okubo 11-3 to win the gold at 145 pounds.

Other girls champions were Punahou’s Bailey Hoshino (97 pounds), Alexis Encinas of Lahainaluna (107), Diamond Freitas of Lahainaluna (112), Joen Tominaga of Pearl City (117), Zion Grace Vierra of Kamehameha (122), Kamehameha’s Tate Williams (132), Aaliyah Wright of Campbell (155), fellow Saber Caragh Morris (168), Aiea’s Sarah Miner (184) and Radhika Sarkar (225), who wrestled for Punahou’s ‘B’ team.

Freitas and Kaitlyn Funai of Hilo tied for the most pins in the tournament with four.

Campbell won the team championship over Lahainaluna.
