Tyler Brashears’ second consecutive gem has resulted in a second consecutive award.
The University of Hawaii right-hander was named Big West Pitcher of the Week for the second week in a row on Monday, becoming just the second BWC pitcher to repeat during this season.
Brashears, a junior from Lake Forest, Calif., followed up his 1-0 victory over UC Santa Barbara at home on April 25 with another 1-0 victory over Long Beach State on the road Saturday.
He hurled 72⁄3 innings with five strikeouts against the Gauchos and then tossed a career-high eight shutout innings with three strikeouts against the Dirtbags and league ERA leader Chris Mathewson, who won successive BWC weekly pitching honors prior to Brashears.
Brashears has recorded 21 consecutive scoreless innings while giving up only run in in his past three starts, all victories. He is 7-4 overall with an earned-run average of 1.78. In the conference, he’s 4-2 with a 1.25 ERA.
Against Long Beach State, Brashears allowed four hits, limited the Dirtbags to .154 hitting and allowed only two runners to advance to second base. No LBSU runner reached third.
Brashears and the Rainbow Warriors (18-26, 9-9 Big West) will remain on the road and will open a three-game series against UC Riverside (13-32, 2-13) on Thursday.
