Pearl City H-1 closures canceled this week

The state Department of Transportation will not close the Ewa-bound lanes of the H-1 freeway at night this week.

Contractors have been working at night on the freeway along the Pearl City viaduct between the Pearl City/Waimalu Off-Ramp (Exit 10) and the Waipahu Off-Ramp (Exit 8B).

Last week, the closures caused huge backups on the freeway.

The state said work will continue from from 11 p.m. on Saturday night, June 7, through 12 noon on Sunday, June 8, with two left-lanes closed for pavement resurfacing.

DOT officials say they're re-evaluating their approach to the lane-closures to better help traffic flow. They said they're considering rescheduling them or breaking up the work into smaller intervals and are trying to coordinate with rail officials to keep from closing lanes on the H-1 and Kamehameha Highway simultaneously.

DOT should know by Thursday or Friday what the lane-closure plan will be for next week, department spokesman Derek Inoshita said Monday.

The state had announced plans to close two lanes on the H-1 freeway along the viaduct from 7:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. nightly from Monday night through Friday morning.

Construction and lane closures are continuing in other areas along the H-1, including full closures in the Koko Head direction between the Vineyard Boulevard onramp (Exit 20B) and the Pali onramp (Exit 21A) through Friday from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. 

The Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation also has a full slate of road proj-ects, including construction on roads and highways in Ewa, Wai-pahu, Pearl City, Aiea, Kalihi and Downtown/Kaka-ako.

Look to more back-pedaling on such events by DOT as we get closer to the primary and the general elections. Abercrombie is very aware of the "Carlisle" effect such aggravating events have on voters.

However, look to more of the same arrogant behavior he had when he uttered those famous words, "I am not your friend...." Mark my words, in his last term, should he get it, he will enact those tax measures on retirees and the elderly. Easy for him with his fed and state/county retirements, and housing allowance. Are you eating well, Abercrumbie? It sure looks like it.

to all the guys who got stuck in that traffic.. one has to wonder what genius at DOT thought its necessary to shut all ten lanes down to ONE going west bound and on top of that do the same on Kam Hwy on Pearl city. What, they couldn't figure out NOT to both at the same time.. a little common sense by DOT officials would help here..

That coupled with the Pearl City construction on both the freeway and Kamehameha makes absolutely no sense. DOT and the City essentially closes all arteries west and central resulting in a huge failure. Whoever is coordinating the projects need to go back to elementary school and learn the basic concept of organization. Follow other cities if you need help with traffic project management. Don't recreate the wheel.

Of course the wheels will not be going around when the rail breaks down due to maintenance problems cause the year round corrosive Hawaii salt air environment will wreak havoc on an electrified, turn of the century old style train design with each Ansaldo rail car weighing about 72,000 pounds each. That is a whole lot metal and electrical and mechanical components to rust and, or breakdown.
