A skateboarder was killed on Kamehameha Highway near the Crouching Lion in Kaaawa early Sunday morning.

Police said the 26-year-old Honolulu man was Kahuku-bound on Kamehameha Highway on a skateboard near Keo Place when he veered onto the roadway in the path of a Kahkuku-bound vehicle.

Police appear to have arrested a 24-year old Laie man in connection with the incident. According to police records, a man was arrested in the area of the crash at 1:35 a.m. on suspicion of driving under the influence of an intoxicant and first-degree negligent homicide.

The skateboarder was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said alcohol may be a factor in the accident. Speed is not a factor.

Police closed, then contraflowed the highway as Traffic Division officers investigated the fatal motor vehicle accident that happened at about 12:43 a.m., officials said.

The highway reopened by 4:30 a.m.

Two friends of the victim, including a man who said he was with the victim when he died, returned to the scene of the incident Sunday morning but did not wish to comment.
