Over three hours after police and firefighters responded to the Matson tractor-trailer fire Monday afternoon on the H-1 freeway in Waikele, traffic was still bumper to bumper back to the H-1 viaduct.

No injuries were reported.

The fire was reported to the Honolulu Fire Department at about 4:10 p.m. Department spokesman David Jenkins said the fire began in the truck.

The driver heard a loud bang before noticing smoke and flames, and pulled over, Jenkins said.

Firefighters arrived to find the truck fully involved in flames.

An engine company doused the flames using its tank water, and a second tanker company arrived to fully extinguish the blaze by 4:45 p.m.

There was no damage to the refrigerated container or its contents, Jenkins said. Another tractor was brought in to move the trailer.
