In the many discussions about which would be the next casino to open in Las Vegas, no one saw this one coming. After closing two years ago, the Klondike Sunset reopened last week under new ownership.

There are no table games, but its predecessor of the same name was known as a place to find old-school bargains, both in the restaurant and on the casino floor.

To be accurate, Klondike Sunset is in neighboring Henderson, on Sunset Road about a mile west of Boulder Highway, but the casinos there are considered a part of the Vegas mix.

GC Steakhouse: A new steakhouse called Cornerstone has opened at the Gold Coast. It’s significant for replacing the Cortez Room, which had been the casino’s top restaurant for many years.

Poker room closes: The poker room at The LINQ has closed again. This one has opened and closed a couple of times, but it appears that this time it’s closed for good.

First contest: With football season around the corner, the first football contest has been announced. Station Casinos’ “Gridiron Glory” is returning for a second year. It’s free to enter and pays prizes weekly, so there’s no reason not to play it, even if only during the week of your trip.

Buffet comp: On Thursdays in August, earn 50 club points at Silverton and get a comped lunch buffet. Earn 100 points and get dinner. Fifty points is just $50 coin-in, which is less than 10 minutes of play on 25-cent slots or video poker.

Question: Are the sports books taking bets on the Olympics?

Answer: Yes.

For the first time since 2000, Nevada sports books are allowed to accept wagers on the Olympics, but don’t expect that you’ll be able to bet on all the events.

The bookmakers are sticking to the most popular sports, e.g., track and field, swimming, boxing and, of course, men’s basketball, which is expected to account for 70 percent of the action.

Conversely, you probably won’t find lines on gymnastics, fencing, water polo, handball and the like.
