Cultural events offered in park
Volcano, Hawaii » Hawaii Volcanoes National Park will offer free Hawaiian cultural workshops this week in celebration of the 48th annual Merrie Monarch Festival.
‘Ike Hana No‘eau (Experience the Skillful Work) programs and live Hawaiian music are scheduled from Wednesday through Friday.
All programs will be held on the Kilauea Visitor Center lanai. Park admission fees apply.
The programs include:
» Nose flute workshop, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday.
» Lei making, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday and Friday.
» Feather kahili making, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday and Friday.
» Creating ti-leaf capes, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday and Friday.
The Volcano Art Center Gallery in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park will host artists, authors and cultural practitioners this week who will share native arts and cultural practices with guests during the Merrie Monarch Festival.
The activities range from hula and ukulele lessons to print- and book-signings by illustrators and authors.
All events take place Tuesday through Friday at the gallery. The events are free, but park entrance fees apply.
