The Search for Signs of Hawaiian Life

For Sunday, May 27, 2012

POSTED:

How do you say Waikiki in Spanish? No need. Apparently everyone is familiar with the word in San Juan, Puerto Rico, where Guy Matsumoto shot a photo of his wife, Nadine, during a Caribbean cruise getaway. The Matsumotos live in Mililani.

We do not mind mispronouncing however if the people of Hawaii could help, it would be nice. For example visitors may say Wah Key Key while the correct pronunciation for Waikiki is why kee kee. The ki is not really like a key sound however more like a kee sound. Another prime example is Hanauma Bay. Some pronounce it as Ha Na Mau Bay while the correct way is Ha Na Oo Ma Bay. The Oo is sort of like the Oooo sound that the late Merv Griffin would say.
