The Search for Signs of Hawaiian Life

For Sunday, December 2, 2012

LAST UPDATED: 11:59 a.m. HST, Dec 03, 2012

Toshiko Sato and her husband, James, of Honolulu came across the Kailua Weekend restaurant last month in a new shopping complex in Shibuya, Japan. The restaurant wasn’t the only reminder of home: A shop next door to Kailua Weekend sold fresh, hot malasadas, and the couple found another eatery named Aloha Table while visiting the Daikanyama district. They also spotted many more signs of Hawaiian life in Hakodate and Kumamoto, James Sato said.

It is VERY difficult for me to understand how the Star Advertiser can post "114,143 people like this" about this empty article! What does that posting really mean?

I think the "114,143 people like this" refers to those who've "liked" the Star-Advertiser on Facebook, not this particular article...

Yep, lots of Hawaii in Japan these days, there's an L&L in Shibuya, too, a Hawaii Coffee Company branch in Odaiba, and lots of malasada and pancake places. I don't know when pancakes became so "Hawaiian" (probably thanks to Eggs 'n Things--another place with locations in Tokyo and Yokohama--and the popularity of Kimo's in Kailua), but we've even got an outpost of Kaila Cafe near the new Tokyo Sky Tree tower. Malasada trucks all over the country, and Aloha Table has at least a dozen branches in Tokyo, Nagoya and elsewhere (not to mention, one in Waikiki). I think I heard about a Yummy Korean BBQ branch in Nagoya, though I'm not sure it's still there.
