State removing trees threatening historic wall

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources is removing two kiawe trees threatening a historic wall at the entrance to Diamond Head State Monument.

The removal is scheduled for today and could continue tomorrow, if necessary.

The park will remain open. However, officials say visitors may expect some traffic control safety measures along the park entrance road.

The trees are causing the wall to collapse. It was built more than 50 years old and was the original entry stone wall built at Fort Ruger. A piece of the wall recently fell off during the Memorial Day weekend.

After repairs to the wall are completed, the department’s Division of State Parks plans to replant the area with native trees.
