Hanamaulu brush fire burns old sugar cane land

 A small brush fire in Hanamaulu on Kauai has prompted county officials to remind residents to take precautions during the state’s extreme dry conditions.

The fire burned about an acre of former sugar cane land near Palani Place. It was reported at 1:30 p.m. and under control within a half hour. Firefighters continued to put out hot spots until the fire was deemed extinguished at 2:45 p.m.

No one was injured in the fire, and no structures were threatened.

Fire officials reminded residents about fire prevention tips including:

Don’t throw lighted cigarettes out of a car window.

Don’t park your vehicle on dry grass.

Never leave a fire unattended, i.e. campfires and backyard burning.
