Robbery, kidnapping suspects indicted

Three women allegedly involved in a purse-snatching at Ala Moana Center that turned into a robbery and kidnapping when one of the victims jumped into the getaway car were indicted by an Oahu grand jury yesterday.

Rachel Koma, 19, of Hawaii Kai, Kayzeen Monis-Hoopai, 18, and Kishan Monis-Hoopai, 20, are charged with kidnapping and second-degree robbery.

Circuit Judge Richard Perkins confirmed bail at $50,000 for both Kayzeen and Kishan Monis-Hoopai. But he reduced the bail for Koma to $25,000 from $50,000. Police said Kayzeen Monis-Hoopai had an outstanding Family Court warrant.

Kishan Monis-Hoopai was wanted on a $15,000 warrant for failing to appear in state court April 26 for sentencing on a vehicle break-in charge to which she had pleaded guilty.

Koma has no convictions but was wanted by police for a robbery at Ala Moana Center on May 31, two days before the purse-snatching.

The alleged victim in the kidnapping and robbery told police she chased after two teenage girls who had stolen her purse and that of a friend June 2 at the center’s food court.

She said she followed the girls into their getaway car and was assaulted and threatened into divulging the personal identification number for her bank card. She said there were other teenage girls in the car.

The woman said after the assailants were unable to withdraw money from automated teller machines in Hawaii Kai and Waimanalo, they let her go.

Police also arrested three teenage girls, ages 14, 16 and 17, in connection with the case. They filed charges in Family Court against the 16- and 17-year-olds but released the 14-year-old.
