The Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the pedestrian killed in an accident Saturday in the Ala Moana area as Edward Hoopiiaina, 35, of Waimanalo.

Hoopiiaina was crossing Kapiolani Boulevard at Kamakee Street in a crosswalk at about 2:45 a.m. when a white 1994 Nissan sedan struck and knocked him to the ground. A two-door 2002 silver Mercedes then ran over him, dragging him to the middle of the road. The driver fled the scene, but was found shortly afterward.

Hoopiiaina was taken to the Queen’s Medical Center in critical condition, police said. He died of head injuries, the Medical Examiner’s Office said.

Police said the 20-year-old Nissan driver of Honolulu pulled into a nearby parking lot, and returned on foot to the scene.

Officers arrested the 25-year-old Mercedes driver.

Police have opened a negligent homicide investigation.
