Probation violation leads to arrest

A former dance instructor, convicted in 2007 for sexually assaulting a former student, is now in custody at the Oahu Community Correctional Center.

Daniel E. Jones, who was a dance teacher at the Rosalie Woodson Dance Academy in Aiea, was arrested Tuesday for probation violation. He is being held without bail.

The prosecutor called Jones a sexual predator and con artist who won the trust of the 14-year-old girl and her parents, who in turn allowed him to sleep over when he claimed to be homeless.

Jones was tried in 2006 on 18 counts of sexual assault involving five girls, ages 12 to 14, over a one-year period beginning in July 2004. Four of the counts involved sexual penetration. He was acquitted on 12 of those counts. The jury could not reach a unanimous verdict on the remaining six. The judge declared a mistrial.

In the second trial, Jones was convicted in 2007 of two counts of third-degree sexual assault, which involved fondling. He was sentenced to a year in jail with five years’ probation.

Escapee held pending court hearing

Prison escapee Sundance Cambra remained in the Honolulu Police Department’s Alapai station cellblock last night awaiting a court appearance.

Cambra, 31, was captured without incident Tuesday afternoon at a home in Ewa near Hawaii Medical Center West. He escaped nine days earlier from the Waiawa Correctional Facility, where he was enrolled in a substance abuse rehabilitation program.

Police took Cambra to a hospital after his capture for treatment of a minor injury not related to his capture, a police spokeswoman said.

Cambra was charged with second-degree escape.

He was returned to Waiawa Correctional Facility in March after his parole was revoked because he was caught on several occasions in possession of illegal drugs.

Cambra was convicted in 2003 for trying to escape from a prison work release program.

Girl in hospital after being hit by bus

A 14-year-old girl was hit by a city bus yesterday while crossing Kapiolani Boulevard and was taken by ambulance to a local hospital in serious condition.

Roger Morton, executive director of TheBus, said the accident is under investigation.

Officials said the accident happened at 7:05 a.m. between Isenberg Street and University Avenue. The girl was in serious condition when she was taken to the hospital.
