The fact and fiction surrounding the recently released film "Princess Kaiulani" will be the focus of a free panel discussion hosted by the Friends of Iolani Palace on Friday from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at the Kana’ina Building near the palace.

Free parking is available on palace grounds.

Guest speakers will include the film’s executive producer, Jeffery Au, and its producer, Ricardo Galindez. They will show a film clip, discuss their experiences working on "Princess Kaiulani" and answer questions.

Hawaii film historian DeSoto Brown will compare the new film with previous films about the islands.

Local historian Nanette Napoleon will address several events and relationships depicted in the movie, such as whether Princess Kaiulani and Clive Davies had a romantic relationship and whether the princess ever had lunch with President Grover Cleveland in the White House.

"It has created a big buzz in the Hawaiian community, and I wanted to talk about it," Napoleon said. "I think it is really important that people, especially in Hawaii, know what is true and not because so many people who watch historical fiction think that everything they see in the movie is true."
