National wrestling title to Corbett

Liam Corbett of Pearl City won the novice 100-pound division in Greco-Roman wrestling at the USA Wrestling national championships in Orem, Utah, in late June.

Corbett defeated Cameron Matzen of Nevada in the final. Corbett, who won the regional championship in Pocatello, Idaho, also in late June, also finished fifth in freestyle.

Also placing for team Hawaii was Brian Pascua Jr., who took third in Greco-Roman novice 85 pounds and eighth in freestyle.

Corbett also won the Greco-Roman novice 100-pound division at the USA West Kids/Cadet Regional Wrestling Championships at Pocatello, Idaho, on June 26.

 

3 named all-tournament in volleyball

Aiden Wong and Cullen Mosher of Ka Ulukoa, and Ku’ikahi’s Kupono Fey were named to the 15-under Open Division all-tournament team at the USA Volleyabll Boys Junior National Championships yesterday in Austin, Texas.

Ka Ulukoa outlasted Ku’ikahi in yesterday’s marathon fifth-place match between the two Hawaii teams, 28-26, 32-34, 18-16. Ka Ulukoa has its 17 Club and 14 Open teams still competing and Ku’ikahi its 14 Open team in the event that concludes tomorrow.

Stubblefield gets spot in US Senior Open

Hawaii Golf Hall of Famer Larry Stubblefield earned Hawaii’s slot in the US Senior Open, firing a 1-under-par 71 to capture the local qualifier at Honolulu Country Club.

Nobumitsu Yuhara (72) of Japan and Hawaii’s Stan Souza (73) are alternates. This year’s US Senior Open will be July 29 to Aug. 1 at Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish, Wash. Fred Funk is defending champion.

 

Min finishes eighth at Georgia event

Honolulu’s Margaret Min, a high school junior, finished eighth, 12 shots out of first, at last week’s AJGA Burgett H. Mooney Jr. Rome Classic, in Rome, Ga. Min shot rounds of 73-76-76 to finish at 12-over 225. Kalea Preus, a sophomore from Honolulu, shot rounds of 77-74-75 and tied for 57th in the boys’ field. Georgia’s Cody Shafer, a high school senior, won with a 54-hole score of 7-under-par 206. The event featured 72 boys and 26 girls from nine states, Colombia, New Zealand, Paraguay and the Philippines.

 

Hawaii, Philippines golfers in qualifying

A field of 19 golfers from Hawaii and the Philippines will play in today’s U.S. Women’s Amateur qualifier at Waikoloa Kings’ on the Big Island. The 18-hole event is one of 20 being held around the country.

Qualifiers advance to the U.S. Women’s Amateur, Aug. 9 to 15 at Charlotte Country Club in North Carolina.

The field includes Nicole Sakamoto, Kristina Merkle, Kacie Komoto, Alina Ching, Allisen Corpuz, Cyd Okino, Cassy Isagawa and Britney Yada.

 

Chan misses cut at AJGA Rolex

‘Iolani junior Lorens Chan shot 76-88 and missed the cut at the 33rd annual AJGA Rolex Tournament of Champions, last week in Johnson, Ark. Juniors from 28 states, Colombia, Denmark, Japan, Mexico, South Africa, Thailand and the Philippines competed.
