Rush team loses in national final

Hawaii Rush 96G failed in its bid to bring a national title back home.

Quickstrike FC defeated the Rush 3-1 in the under-14 final of the U.S. Club Soccer national championships in Virginia Beach, Va., yesterday.

Rush team members are Alyssa Almogela, Casie Aniya, Caitlyn Estanique, Karina Gabino, Brittney Gideon, Nikki Higa, Kristen Lum, Alisha Miyashiro, Tara Oyasato, Alix Suwa, Casey Tabion, Jahna Tacson, Lauren Takai, Michaela Yoshida, Brittney Yoshimura, Brooke Yoshimura, head coach Brent Murakami and assistant coach Steve Miyashiro.

3 chosen for UHH Hall of Fame

After a five-year hiatus, Hawaii-Hilo’s Athletic Vulcan Hall of Fame luncheon returns with a Sept. 4 awards ceremony.

Former volleyball coach Sharon Peterson, former basketball point guard Mark Lovelace and former softball catcher Melanie Hipwell will be inducted at the UHH Campus Center.

Door open at 11:30 a.m. Tickets are $25 and available through Glen Kagamida at 974-7543 or glenk@hawaii.edu.

Peterson won seven national volleyball championships during her 25 years as a Vulcans coach. She compiled a 511-251 record before retiring in 2002.

Lovelace, who played for the Vulcans in the late 1970s, holds Hawaii-Hilo’s school record of 455 assists.

Hipwell, who played from 1997 through 2000, holds seven career school records, including hits (233), doubles (37) and fielding percentage (.976).
