The board of directors of the Hawaii State Bar Association has characterized Chief Justice-designate Katherine Leonard as “unqualified” for the job, the association announced today.

There was no immediate explanation for the determination.

Leonard, a state appellate court judge, was nominated by Gov. Linda Lingle to replace Chief Justice Ronald Moon. The state Senate Judiciary Committee is scheduled to hold a hearing on her appointment tomorrow.
