Kapolei’s only score came on an 8-yard run by fullback Keaka Fernandez with 3:35 left in the first half.
Despite the lopsided score, Punahou head coach Kale Ane voiced his respect for the Hurricanes.
"I thought their kids played hard. (Kapolei) is a tough team to play," he said. "There were a lot of difficult formations for us to defend.
"They’re very athletic on their defense, so it was a good test for us. I thought the game was in doubt for a long time. We have a lot of respect for (Kapolei head coach) Darren (Hernandez), and the whole team."
Jacob Ioane ran for a pair of touchdowns for Punahou to put the game out of reach.
Matsuo completed half of his pass attempts (7-for-14) and did not throw an interception.
Kapolei, a run-oriented squad, gained 131 yards rushing and was led by Fernandez (70 yards) and quarterback Keaka Napuelua Ah Yee (53 yards). But the Hurricanes struggled with the passing game for the second straight week, being held to 3 yards on six attempts. They were shut down by Pearl City in their opener.
