Wie moves to No. 7 in world rankings
Honolulu’s Michelle Wie jumped five spots to No. 7 in the Rolex Women’s World Golf rankings released yesterday by the LPGA Tour.
Wie began 2010 ranked 10th and recently dipped to 12th during a so-so summer that saw the Punahou School graduate not finish in the top 10 for two months before her win on Sunday at the CN Canadian Women’s Open in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
The No. 1 player in the world remains Japan’s Ai Miyazato. Cristie Kerr is the top American and is ranked No. 2. During the two-year ratings period, Miyazato has played in 56 events, while Wie has appeared in only 36. She is the No. 2-rated American-born player.
The 20-year-old will play in only one more event, in Arkansas on Sept. 10-12, before returning to Stanford for the fall trimester. She will play in a couple of events this fall while in school before returning full-time to the tour early next year.
Wie has started in 15 tournaments this year and is currently 10th on the tour money list with $667,159. She has four top 10s and missed only one cut, at the U.S. Women’s Open.
