Victim captures robbery suspect

Police arrested a suspect in a robbery late Thursday night after the victim and bystanders chased him and held him for police on Keeaumoku Street.

A man took an unattended laptop computer at a Kapiolani Boulevard business after the victim, 26, went to speak to a friend about 50 feet away, police said. The victim watched as a man picked up and carried his laptop away.

When the victim demanded his laptop back, the robber pushed him and punched him in the arm before fleeing, police said. The victim and several bystanders caught the suspect at a nearby business on Keeaumoku Street and detained him until police arrived.

The 25-year-old suspect, of no permanent address, is being held pending a second-degree robbery charge, according to police.

Man charged for allegedly taking SUV

A 40-year-old Big Island man was arrested yesterday for allegedly stealing a Jeep SUV last month.

Kona patrol officers responding to an unrelated incident in Honalo encountered two men and a woman who were being sought in connection with the Jeep.

They arrested all three — including a 59-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman — but charged only Zachary Kanakanui. All the suspects are from Hilo.

The man and the woman were released pending investigation.

Kanakanui is being held at the Kona police cellblock in lieu of $10,000 bail pending a court appearance, police said.

Kauai panel OKs fence at rifle range

LIHUE » A request by the Hawaii Army National Guard to erect a fence closing off nearly 10 acres at the Kekaha Rifle Range has been approved by the Kauai County Planning Commission.

National Guard officials told the commission the fence is needed to deter vandalism, to control access and to provide security.

The planned 6-foot-tall, 1.2-mile-long fence will be topped with three strands of barbed wire. It will be constructed along the eastern, western and southern boundaries of the range.

Last January, the commission approved an Army request to install a fence 102 feet from the shoreline. Rifle Range is a popular surf spot in the area.
