The Warriors defense gave up 308 yards — 250 on the ground — over 70 plays by the Black Knights, but they forced a fumble and blocked a field-goal attempt late in the fourth quarter to keep the Warriors alive.

WEST POINT, N.Y. » Spencer Smith, Hawaii’s starting strong safety, is expected to miss between six and eight weeks of games after suffering a fractured right forearm in yesterday’s 31-28 victory over Army.

Smith suffered the injury in the first half, and was examined in Michie Stadium’s medical room.

Smith is expected to undergo surgery in the coming week.

The Warriors leave today for Las Vegas, where they will train in preparation for Saturday’s road game against Colorado. Smith is expected to return to Honolulu today.

Smith is a fifth-year senior who has started the past two years. A resident of Georgia, he was named a team captain for the season opener against Southern California.

He already has earned a bachelor’s degree.

Smith is expected to assist the defensive secondary while recovering from the injury.

LOOKING TO PLAY ARMY AGAIN

Hawaii athletic director Jim Donovan said he has had talks with Army officials about future games between the teams.

The Warriors are already booked to host the Black Knights on Nov. 30, 2013.

"We’re open to scheduling them home-and-home and they’re open to scheduling us home-and-home," Donovan said.

If Hawaii goes independent after the recent shakeup in the Western Athletic Conference, he would try to schedule Army for games in October or November, because the Black Knights are independent and don’t have to worry about scheduling conference games in that time frame.

SHORT YARDAGE

Five National Football League scouts attended yesterday’s game. Right tackle Laupepa Letuli, running back Alex Green, and receivers Greg Salas, Rodney Bradley and Kealoha Pilares are considered to be the Warriors’ top draft prospects. … For the first time in recent memory, UH had two punt returners in the same lineup. Ryan Henry and Salas are handling those duties. … Left tackle Austin Hansen served as a team captain yesterday. Linebacker Corey Paredes, defensive tackle Vaughn Meatoga, and slotback Salas are the permanent captains. Each week, a fourth player serves as captain.
