A fair for health

Kauai County is holding its fourth annual Health & Wellness Fair 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at the Lihue Civic Center, in the breezeway between the Mo’ikeha and Pi’ikoi buildings. The fair is being held in recognition of September being National Alcohol & Drug Recovery Month and Women’s Health Month.

Board rejects Molokai school closing

The state Board of Education voted unanimously Thursday to keep Molokai’s Maunaloa Elementary School open and not consolidate it with Kaunakakai Elementary School.

The full board’s actions matched an earlier recommendation by its Committee on Administrative Services, led by John Penebacker.

Penebacker yesterday said the board plans to reconsider the issue involving the consolidation of isolated rural schools — which in many cases are the heart and soul of their communities — and focus on schools in the urban area.

Maunaloa with its enrollment of 71 students is about 18 miles, or a 30-minute car drive, from Kaunakakai, which has 238 students.
