Seattle visitor dies at Wailua Falls
A 25-year-old male visitor from Seattle apparently drowned at Wailua Falls yesterday afternoon, the Kauai Fire Department said.
The man had been swimming with others when he became separated from the group. Upon noticing that the man was missing, the rest of the group called for help. The man was found unresponsive at about 2:15 p.m. at the base of the falls.
Hit-and-run leaves 2 men injured
A 26-year-old man is in critical condition and a 22-year-old man is in serious condition following an apparent hit-and-run incident in Kihei early yesterday morning.
Maui police are looking for the driver of a pickup truck that allegedly hit the two men as they attempted to traverse a crosswalk on South Kihei Road around 2 a.m.
The driver did not stop to render aid.
Group robbed at gunpoint in Kahala
Six teenagers and young adults were robbed at gunpoint at a Kahala beach yesterday by two men who escaped in a dark-colored SUV, police said.
One of the men had a handgun and told members of the group to empty their pockets or they would be shot, police said. In the group at 1:20 a.m. were a 17-year-old boy and three men, ages 19, 21 and 21, and two women, ages 18 and 21, police said.
No one was injured.
Suspect allegedly burns girlfriend
A 67-year-old man allegedly placed a lit cigarette lighter to the face and arms of his 66-year-old girlfriend Saturday during an argument in their Nuuanu apartment, police said.
The flames caused minor injuries in the 3:20 p.m. incident, police said. The man then grabbed a knife from the kitchen and threatened the woman, police said.
The woman fled to a neighbor’s apartment and called police, who arrested her boyfriend for investigation of first-degree terroristic threatening and abuse of a family or household member.
Kalalau work reveals illegal campsites
The state has conducted several sweeps of Kalalau beach and valley on Kauai since closing the area Sept. 7, picking up trash and citing illegal campers, the Garden Island newspaper reports.
An 11-mile stretch of the Na Pali Coast has been closed for rockfall mitigation work and to reduce the numbers of goats and pigs.
Curt Cottrell, assistant administrator of the Division of State Parks, said he was shocked by the amount of garbage left behind by campers.
"It’s deplorable," he said.
The detritus includes alcohol bottles and cans, blankets, tarps, food, books, clothing and other items indicating long-term residence, he said.
Officers from the DLNR Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement found 14 illegal campsites in the valley and a like number on the beach, officials said. It took workers two days just to collect trash for removal via boat and helicopter, said Cottrell, adding that more, permanent enforcement efforts will be made once the camping areas reopen to the public Nov. 1.
Man in abuse case gets jail and probation
A Lahaina man who choked his girlfriend in December has been sentenced to six months in jail and five years’ probation.
The Maui News reported that Circuit Judge Richard Bissen gave Moses N. Kalilikane, 40, credit Wednesday for the 108 days he has already served in jail. But the judge ordered him to attend domestic violence classes after he is released.
Kalilikane, whose record includes 35 arrests and 15 convictions, pleaded no contest to felony abuse of a family or household member.
Defense attorney Kerry Ison said Kalilikane has taken positive steps to improve his life by spending more time with his children and even coaching one child’s athletic team.
