Hawaii, Pacific tie in soccer

The Hawaii soccer team stopped its losing streak at five with a 0-0 tie at Pacific yesterday in its final contest before Western Athletic Conference play.

Despite being outshot 17-6 for the game and 13-3 in the second half, UH (2-8-1) preserved the shutout behind a stellar outing by goalkeeper Kanani Taaca. The sophomore had nine saves in playing all 110 minutes.

UH coach Pinsoom Tenzing will take the draw against the Tigers (3-4-3), especially after the Rainbow Wahine suffered their worst defeat in program history — a 9-0 loss at No. 2 Stanford on Thursday — and fell 1-0 at home to Pacific to start the season.

UH has been shut out five straight matches, extending a dubious school record. The Wahine last scored on Sept 5 at Cal.

Patacchia moves on to third round

Hawaii’s Fred Patacchia won his first-round heat to advance to the third round yesterday at the Quiksilver Pro France surf contest.

Hawaii’s Andy Irons, Dusty Payne and Roy Powers did not win their heats and moved on to the second round of the Association of Surfing Professionals World Tour event.
