Firefighters continue to douse hot spots at a residential structure fire on Halona Rd. at Ohemauka Pl. in Waianae. The house sustained considerable damage from the fire and neighbors believe a resident did not escape the fire.

A man in his 50s was killed during a fire that destroyed a two-story house at 86-464 Halona Road in the Lualualei section of Waianae this afternoon.

The fire was reported just before 2 p.m. The home was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived and the roof collapsed while they were there.

The man was pronounced dead at about 4:31p.m., said Bryan Cheplilc, spokesman for the city Department of Emergency Services.

Relatives identified the victim as Mario Eder. They said he was in his 50s and was originally from the Philippines.

The two-story structure was home to about 10 people, said Honolulu Fire Capt. Terry Seelig.

The body, which was found on the first floor, was not immediately retrieved pending the arrival of the city Medical Examiner’s Office, Seelig said.

Police shut down Halona between Kuwale and Lualualei Homestead Road. Fire officials estimated the property loss at $400,000 to the home and $50,000 to its contents.
