Eagles soar again in volleyball

After a rough 0-4 start, Hawaii Baptist is the latest team in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu to catch fire. The Eagles have won seven of their last eight matches, including a "Spike Night" victory over then-No. 10 ‘Iolani 25-20, 25-16 on Friday before a crowd of 1,000.

It’s good news for a program that lost All-State players Sarah Palmer and C’era Oliveira to graduation. Tiffany Thompson had eight kills to lead HBA against the Raiders.

Shop and Score under way

The annual Shop and Score fundraiser program operated by Kraft Foods and Times Supermarkets is doubling its output.

Funding has increased from $100,000 in donations to $200,000 to mark the program’s 10th anniversary.

Castle was the top recipient last year with more than $11,000 of free Adidas uniforms and equipment. This year’s campaign includes schools from Kauai and Maui for the first time. The program began in late August and concludes today.

Hallums bleeds Pearl City purple

It was tough enough watching his alma mater lose to Waipahu.

Former Pearl City quarterback David Hallums was on the air as a color man for a radio broadcast as the Chargers lost to Waipahu on Friday.

"It was a frustrating game for alumni, but I tell you what, Waipahu has a great team," said Hallums, who played at Pearl City in the early 1980s before playing basketball at BYU-Hawaii and UH.

Hallums was impressed with Waipahu running back Victor Moananu, who rushed for 177 yards.

"What Victor brings to the table, he sets up the run, sets up the play-action. Coach Sean Saturnio, a UH alum himself, I gotta love what he’s doing," Hallums said.

He has only encouragement for Pearl City, which has a solid defense and some youth on offense.

"I would love to be coached by Kai Kamaka and being able to air it out, understand what the game is, what the coverage is. They have a young quarterback (Brock Texeira) who’s going to be great.

"Pearl City’s going to be back," he added, with a bit of promise. "This was just for seeding purposes."
