Alcohol is suspected in a pedestrian accident in Nanakuli early this morning that killed a 40-year-old Waianae man.

Police said a Waianae-bound 2005 Chevrolet multi-purpose vehicle driven by a 30-year-old Waianae woman veered off Farrington Highway near Haleakala Ave. at 4:15 a.m. and struck a 40-year-old man walking on the mauka sidewalk.

The vehicle  also hit a utility pole.

The 40-year-old man died at the scene. The woman and a 21-year-old man, who was a passenger in the car, were taken to the hospital in serious condition. The woman was released; but the 21-year-old man was admitted in stable condition, police said.

Police opened a negligent homicide investigation. They said speed may also be a factor. So far this year, 45 people have died on Oahu roads compared to 41 at this time last year.
