Moore wins Portugal surf meet

Hawaii’s Carissa Moore upset world No. 1 Stephanie Gilmore of Australia in yesterday’s final of the ASP Rip Curl Pro Portugal off Lagide, Portugal.

The 18-year-old Moore, a rookie on the Women’s World Tour, dominated in 6- to 8-foot surf against reigning world champ Gilmore 17.44 to 8.60. It was the second tour win for Moore, moving her up to No. 5 in the world rankings.

Hawaii’s Coco Ho lost in the third round to tie for ninth, and Bethany Hamilton didn’t advance out of the first round, tying for 17th place.

Chaminade wins first PacWest match

Poerava Gantt had 16 kills and 24 of Chaminade’s 100 digs as the Silverswords ended Grand Canyon’s 12-match home winning streak with a 21-25, 25-23, 23-25, 25-23, 18-16 win in Pacific West Conference women’s volleyball last night in Phoenix.

Allie Board added 13 kills and Kristy Inamasu 30 digs for the Silverswords (4-8, 1-4). The Antelopes dropped to 8-11 and 4-4.

» At Belmont, Calif., Brigham Young-Hawaii had three players record double-doubles as the Seasiders moved into a first-place tie with Hawaii-Hilo in the PacWest with a 25-13, 22-25, 25-16, 25-21 win over Notre Dame de Namur.

Lauren Hagemeyer had 17 kills and 11 digs, Julia Becker 12 kills and 11 digs, and Losaline Faka’osi 11 kills and 17 digs for BYUH (7-5, 4-1). The Argonauts dropped to 3-8 and 1-3.

» At San Rafael, Calif., Hillary Hurley put down 24 kills to lead Hawaii-Hilo to a 25-14, 25-22, 25-18 win over Dominican.

Patty Vine added 20 digs for the Vulcans (10-3, 4-1) against the Penguins (2-15, 0-6).

» At St. George, Utah, Natasha Bell turned in her second consecutive double-double, but it wasn’t enough as Hawaii Pacific was swept by Dixie State 25-22, 25-22, 27-25.

Courtney Curran and Miriam Flemming added 10 kills each for the Sea Warriors (10-3, 4-2 PacWest). The Red Storm (8-6, 3-3) lost to HPU on Friday in five.

Puzey, Aspnaes top runners

Thomas Puzey of Brigham Young-Hawaii and Hawaii Pacific’s Frida Aspnaes won their respective races at the Hawaii-Hilo Vulcan Invitational cross country meet yesterday on the Naniloa Volcanoes Golf Course.

BYUH easily won both the men’s and women’s titles.

Puzey finished the men’s 8-kilometer race in 20 minutes, 49 seconds, beating out teammate Justin Royer by 10 seconds.

In the women’s 6K race, 38 seconds separated the top three finishers, led by Aspnaes in 22:14. BYUH’s Lacey Krout was 7 seconds back (22:21) and Seasiders teammate Katherine Buxton third (22:52).
