Pickup truck goes over cliff on Big Island, seriously injuring two women

A pickup truck carrying two women went off Mamalahoa Highway and down a 50-foot cliff on the Big Island this morning.

Fire officials, who received the emergency call at 9:18 a.m., said the two women were injured when the truck headed north on the highway went down Kaawalii Gulch in Laupahoehoe.

A tree stopped the vehicle from plunging to the bottom of the gulch. Fire rescue workers brought the woman out of the vehicle and up from the gulch, officials said.

The two were transported in serious but stable condition to North Hawaii Community Hospital.
