Although he has been on the job for several days, new Honolulu Mayor Peter Carlisle is to be formally feted at the end of the week.

An inauguration ceremony is scheduled for 5 p.m. Friday at the Mission Memorial Auditorium, adjacent to Honolulu Hale.

The one-hour event is open to the public, although seating is limited, a city spokeswoman said.

Carlisle was officially sworn in to office Oct. 11, after a required 20-day waiting period to certify the results of the Sept. 18 special election for mayor.

Ceremonies were put off as one of his first acts in office was to take a trip to Washington, D.C., to meet with federal transit officials and reaffirm the new city administration’s commitment to rail transit. He returned from the four-day trip on Saturday.

Carlisle won the special election last month to fill the final two years of the term of Mufi Hannemann, who resigned before making an unsuccessful bid for governor.

Carlisle, the former city prosecutor, won with 39 percent of the vote, topping Acting Mayor Kirk Caldwell, who had 35 percent, and University of Hawaii engineering professor Panos Prevedouros, with 19 percent.

Inauguration ceremonies in traditional mayoral election years are lavish affairs set for Jan. 2, when the new mayor and City Council members are sworn in.

In 2009, for his second inauguration, Hannemann opted for a more modest ceremony in recognition of the state’s struggling economy.

After Hannemann took the oath of office at Kapolei Hale, the city hosted a two-hour public celebration at Hawaii Theatre that continued into Chinatown’s monthly First Friday event.
