Coast Guard flies two sick Japanese fishermen to Honolulu for treatment
The Coast Guard flew two sick Japanese fishermen to Honolulu from Midway Island yesterday.
The fishermen, both 19, were aboard a Japanese-flagged fishing boat, the Shonan Maru, which was 900 miles west of Oahu when the Coast Guard received the call 5:45 p.m. Sunday from the Transmarine Navigation Agency Honolulu.
Rescue coordinators contacted the boat captain at midnight Monday and relayed the condition of the patients to a Coast Guard flight surgeon, and the boat captain was instructed to divert to Midway.
The Coast Guard launched a C-130 Hercules plane and picked up the men at 2:30 p.m. yesterday.
The plane arrived at Barbers Point Air Station 11 p.m. yesterday. The men were transferred to a waiting ambulance, which transported them to Kuakini Medical Center.
