Sea Warriors sweep Penguins

Brittany Wood had 10 kills, hitting .588, and Kelly Balanay was in on six of the team’s 11 blocks as Hawaii Pacific needed just 75 minutes to sweep Dominican 25-11, 25-15, 25-18 in a PacWest women’s volleyball match last night at St. Andrew’s Priory gym.

Kyra Pelayo had 18 of the 58 digs for the Sea Warriors (16-4, 10-3 PacWest). The Penguins (3-23, 0-14) got 16 digs from Ashley Pittman.

Argos drop Silverswords

Christine Villamayor had 18 kills and 19 digs to lead Notre Dame de Namur to a 25-12, 25-15, 22-25, 25-22 win over Chaminade at McCabe Gym.

Poerava Gantt and Klee Pedro each had nine kills for the Silverswords (6-13, 3-9) against the Argos (5-14, 3-9).

Seasiders’ rally falls short

At Cannon Activities Center, Brigham Young-Hawaii rallied from an 0-2 deficit but couldn’t complete the comeback, falling to Dixie State 25-20, 25-15, 13-25, 22-25, 15-7.

Lauren Hagemeyer put down 15 kills and Losaline Faka’osi 13 for the Seasiders (13-7, 10-3). The Red Storm (13-9, 8-6) finished with 12 aces.

Fuller rallies HPU past UHH

Meghan Fuller scored two of Hawaii Pacific’s three second-half goals to lead the Sea Warriors over Hawaii-Hilo in a PacWest women’s soccer match yesterday at the UHH field.

HPU improved to 7-8 overall and 7-5 in the PacWest. The Vulcans dropped to 6-9-1 and 5-7.

» In the earlier men’s match, HPU edged Hawaii-Hilo 3-2 in overtime, with an own goal off a Vulcans defender in the 93rd minute.

The Vulcans (6-7-2, 5-4-2) tied it with less than 7 minutes left in regulation on a penalty kick by Drew Geis. The Sea Warriors improved to 10-6 and 9-3.

Red Storm blanks Silverswords

Zac Hales scored in the second minute against Chaminade to lead Dixie State to a 4-0 win in PacWest men’s soccer at St. George, Utah.

The Silverswords (1-11-1, 0-10-1) were outshot 20-4 by the Red Storm (6-8-1, 5-5-1).

» In the later women’s match, Whitney Williams headed in her second goal of the season to keep Chaminade close in the first half, but it wasn’t enough in a 5-1 loss to Dixie State.

Marissa Minor had six saves, but gave up three second-half goals for Chaminade (2-11, 2-9) against the Red Storm (9-6, 6-5).

UH seventh at WAC cross country

Senior Ashley Aitken finished 14th to lead Hawaii to seventh place at yesterday’s Western Athletic Conference women’s cross country championships in Moscow, Idaho.

Aitken, who earned second-team All-WAC honors, was timed in 18 minutes, 13.33 seconds over the 5-kilometer course. She was nearly a minute behind winner Courtney Schultz (17:37.24) of New Mexico State.

Host Idaho won the team title.
