3 Hawaii surfers advance

Roy Powers, Fred Patacchia and Dusty Payne moved on to the third round with second-round victories in the Rip Curl Pro Search surf contest yesterday in Puerto Rico.

Payne knocked out former world champion Andy Irons of Kauai in his heat in the Association of Surfing Professionals World Tour event.

Kelly Slater of Florida, in pursuit of his unprecedented 10th world title, is also slated to surf in the third round.

In the women’s Rip Curl Pro Search, Hawaii’s Coco Ho, Melanie Bartels and Carissa Moore all advanced to the quarterfinals with third-round wins yesterday.

 

Rainbow Wahine sailors take second

The Hawaii women’s sailing team placed second at the PCCSC Fall Championships yesterday at Stanford, Calif.

Host Stanford won the event, and Hawaii finished seven points behind.

Hannah Tuson-Turner and Hanne Nagatani powered the Rainbow Wahine’s A division crew, and Madeline Kennedy and Holly Nishiguchi led UH’s B division crew.
