Terror suspect arrested in Hawaii held without bail in New York

NEW YORK  – A man arrested in Hawaii last month has been ordered held without bail in New York on charges he lied to authorities after devising a failed plot to desert from the U.S. military and join insurgents in Iraq.

Abdel Hameed Shehadeh (shuh-HAH’-deh) appeared briefly today in Brooklyn federal court. He did not enter a plea to making false statements to U.S. authorities investigating international terrorism.

A criminal complaint says Shehadeh, a U.S. citizen, originally wanted to join Taliban forces in Pakistan. It says the 21-year-old New Yorker later went to a Times Square military recruiting station, hoping the Army would deploy him to Iraq.

Authorities say Shedaheh also created websites that posted speeches by al-Qaida leaders. He was arrested Oct. 22 in Hawaii.
