Letters to the Editor

Election volunteers much appreciated

I’d like to thank all the volunteers who made this past election possible.

Without their dedication and commitment the polling stations would be chaotic.

I would especially like to thank the ladies at Keolu Elementary School for their great work and assistance.

Again, mahalo to all of the volunteers for their service.

It was ‘shaka’ to see voters casting ballots

I was a Kanu Hawaii poll worker volunteer assigned by the state Office of Elections to a 7 a.m.-6 p.m. volunteer work day at Jefferson Elementary School.

It was "shaka" to see enthusiastic voters cast their ballots into the ballot box machine, which electronically recorded each vote cast.

I am elated that Neil Abercrombie will be our next governor and that courageous Colleen Hanabusa won her battle for Congress!

Election was victory for responsibility

Finally, Nancy Pelosi will no longer be the speaker of the House. Big government, out-of-control spending, penalizing business and increasing taxes has always been the wrong formula to get the economy moving.

Tuesday’s election was a big victory for responsible government. The new Congress will make a difference in getting our economy where it’s supposed to be.

Oceanic’s pay-per-view is being mishandled

I can’t believe Oceanic Cable is going to refund UH PPV subscribers only $27 for today’s Boise State-UH game to be televised on ESPNU.

According to my calculations Oceanic has determined all 16 events on the UH PPV schedule are equal.

Now, I can appreciate women’s volleyball, but I sure don’t want to pay for it, much less have it be equal in value to the biggest UH football game on the schedule. That and having to miss part of last week’s first half because of a "technical issue" makes pay-per-view a misnomer.

There’s a reason cable companies are losing subscribers. Oceanic’s actions are evidence of their decline.

‘Hawaii Five-0’ needs to be more authentic

It seems to me that the draw for most folks old enough to recall the original "Hawaii Five-0" is its originality, intrigue and authenticity to Hawaii and the local people who portrayed local life then.

I tend to come across many international tourists from various countries. I’m proud to share stories about Hawaii for what it is. It is in these moments we can generate thought-provoking discussions on our Hawaii that people will tell their friends and family about.

I think the "Hawaii Five-0" remake is nice, but the producers may need to listen and be a bit more attentive to what matters for the people who have businesses here and live here full-time. The money and exposure must be good for the state, but authenticity provides value and will get them further. I’m sure of it.

Neighborhood safety starts with little things

I know the police have many more pressing issues, like 70-year-old women jaywalking in Chinatown, but our street in Kalihi should not be a rooster haven nor a drug drive-in just because it is a dead end.

Also, we have at least seven vehicles that haven’t moved in more than six months; when we call the police, they drive by and, apparently because they know the owners, they do nothing.

We want to keep our neighborhoods safe? It starts with the little stuff.
