Search ends for Big Island man who left jail
HILO — The search has ended for a Big Island man who left the Hawaii Community Correctional Center while police were there to arrest him on a new warrant.
West Hawaii Today is quoting Capt. Robert Wagner as saying that acting on a tip from the public, police arrested 29-year-old Kaulike Rice on Saturday night at an apartment complex in Hilo.
Rice was to be arrested Oct. 13 as he was being released from the jail after serving a sentence in a separate case. Instead, he allegedly fled from the lone police officer assigned to arrest him on a warrant charging him with various drug crimes and other offenses.
Procedures at the jail have been changed to guard against a similar event happening again.
Rice pleaded not guilty to the charges Monday.
