State increases HI-5¢ redemption payouts

People who cash in cans and bottles at the state’s HI-5¢ redemption centers will be paid a bit more starting Dec. 1.

The Department of Health, which administers the program, announced that rates for HI-5¢ redeemable cans and bottles have been adjusted.

Here are the new rates:

>> Aluminum cans: $1.60 per pound, up from $1.58.
>> Bi-metal cans: 29.5 cents per pound, up from 23 cents.
>> Glass bottles: 12 cents per pound, up from 11.5 cents.
>> Mixed-size plastic bottles: 94 cents per pound, up from 87 cents.
>> Small plastic bottles (up to fluid 17 ounces): $1.315 per pound, up from $1.22.

Customers will continue to have the option of requesting a hand-count of up to 200 containers per visit.
