BYUH to cross country nationals

The Brigham Young-Hawaii women’s cross country team finished sixth at yesterday’s NCAA II West Regional in Bellingham, Wash., to qualify for the NCAA II National Championship for the first time in program history.

The Seasiders scored 213 points in the race that was run in 3 inches of snow. Junior Lacey Johnson Krout was the top BYUH finisher, placing 23rd overall on the 6K course in 23 minutes, 54 seconds.

Hawaii Pacific’s Frida Aspnaes just missed out qualifying for the Dec. 4 national meet in Louisville when she finished third among individuals from non-qualifying teams. (The top two qualified). Aspnaes was timed in 23:26.5 to earn All-Region honors as a top-15 finisher.

Seasiders men don’t qualify

The Brigham Young-Hawaii men’s cross country team placed sixth at yesterday’s NCAA II West Regional in Bellingham, Wash., ending the PacWest conference champion’s season.

Senior Thomas Puzey finished 30th to lead the Seasiders with a 33:21, the sixth-best time 10K in BYUH history.

Sea Warriors top Western Oregon

Nick Frazier scored 18 points and Kyle Allen added 14 points and 13 rebounds to lead Hawaii Pacific to a 71-65 win in the WOU/Phoenix Inn D2 Shootout men’s basketball tournament last night in Monmouth, Ore.

Keenan Prince came off the bench for 11 points, hitting three 3-pointers, for the Sea Warriors (3-1). Blair Weadon led the host Wolves (1-3) with 17 points.

Vulcans hold off Seasiders

Hillary Hurley, the PacWest player of the year in volleyball, made a successful debut for the Hawaii-Hilo women’s basketball team yesterday, coming off the bench for a team-high 20 points in a 60-56 victory over Brigham Young-Hawaii at the UHH gym.

Phylicia Schultz added 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Vulcans (1-3) in a nonconference game. Richelle Eiben led the Seasiders (0-1) with 25 points, hitting five 3-pointers, and Danna Lynn Hooper added 10.

Sea Warriors lose on road

Jazzmin Awa-Williams scored 12 points and Courtney Buster added 10, but it wasn’t enough as Hawaii Pacific lost to host Chico State yesterday 64-46 in the Coslet Classic at Chico, Calif.

Natasha Smith had 13 points for the Wildcats (2-0) against the Sea Warriors (1-3).

Silverswords routed

Briaunna King scored 33 points to lead Northwest Nazarene over Chaminade 103-50 yesterday in the Central Washington Classic at Ellensburg, Wash.

Jordan Ahakuelo led the Silverswords (0-4) with 12 and Markeshia Manning added 11.
