Utah State sweeps Hawaii for WAC volleyball title
Third-seeded Utah State stunned No. 3 Hawaii tonight 25-15, 27-25, 26-24 in the Western Athletic Conference tournament championship in Las Vegas.
The loss ends the Rainbow Wahine’s streak of consecutive tournament championships at 10. Hawaii (28-2) had not lost in the WAC tournament since the 1997 title match against Brigham Young.
The victory gives the Aggies (24-8) the automatic berth into next week’s NCAA tournament. Hawaii will get an at-large berth.
Kanani Danielson led the Wahine with 20 kills and 12 digs.
A number of Hawaii streaks ended tonight. The Wahine had won 62 consecutive sets, had not lost in 23 matches, and had won 30 consecutive WAC tournament matches.
The 15 points scored in Set 1 was also the fewest the Wahine had scored in a WAC tournament match.
