With head coach sidelined, Farrington rolls to victory
For the first time in more than three seasons, the Lady Governors of Farrington played without coach Caroline Tatupu on their bench.
But what could have been a total struggle with rival Kahuku turned into a 69-49 runaway last night at Richard Kitamura Memorial Fieldhouse. Brydgette Tatupu-Leopoldo pumped in 14 first-half points for Farrington, which improved to 2-0 in Oahu Interscholastic Association Red East play.
Tatupu sat in the bleachers after being suspended for one game, an automatic penalty for receiving two technical fouls in Farrington’s win at Kaimuki on Monday.
"I’m relieved. I’m very relieved," Tatupu said.
Assistant coach Steven Leopoldo, filling in for Tatupu, was all smiles.
"The girls will make mistakes. We just want to help them out when we can," he said. "It’s a good win for the team. They bonded because of Coach (Tatupu)."

Kahuku lost for the second time in three nights, using a platoon system that allowed coach David Te’o to continue assessing his personnel. Though girls basketball teams began practice three weeks ago, time has been short with tryouts, tournament play and as of last week, boys’ tryouts.
Kirsten Liana led Farrington with 17 points on 7-for-9 shooting, and her ballhandling was key against Kahuku’s man-to-man pressure. Tatupu-Leopoldo had a game-high eight assists to go with four 3-pointers.
Farrington used an 18-5 run in the second quarter to break open a close game.
Kahuku was hampered by academic probation; two starting guards sat out. Joshy Noga paced the Lady Raiders with 17 points. Kahuku shot 44 percent from the field (21-for-48), but committed 18 turnovers and was dismal from the foul line (7-for-21).
Te’o knows time is on Kahuku’s side. Six of the seven teams in the East will qualify for the double-elimination playoff tournament.
In addition, life on campus hasn’t quite been the same since the death of football player Keoni Tafuna.
"Unfortunately, since the incident, things at our school haven’t been settled yet," Te’o said.
With the long season ahead, Te’o is positive.
"We’ll take this game and learn from it. We’ll go back to the drawing board," he said.
