Hawaii’s two U.S. House members have split on whether to censure Democratic Rep. Charles Rangel of New York on ethics charges.

Republican Rep. Charles Djou, who represents urban Honolulu, voted Thursday with a bipartisan group of 332 other House members to administer the second highest form of punishment against Rangel.

In a statement, Djou says elected officials should be held to the highest ethical standards and Rangel failed to maintain that standard.

Democratic Rep. Mazie Hirono, who represents the remainder of the state, voted against censure with 78 other House members. She earlier voted for an unsuccessful resolution to reprimand Rangel.

In a statement, she said she voted for what she believed was the appropriate penalty.
