Irving leads No. 1 Duke past No. 6 Michigan State
Durham, N.C. » Freshman Kyrie Irving scored a season-high 31 points and No. 1 Duke beat No. 6 Michigan State 84-79 last night in the marquee matchup of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
Nolan Smith added 17 points and Kyle Singler scored 15 for the Blue Devils (7-0). They shot 47 percent, turned 20 Michigan State turnovers into 28 points, used a 12-2 spurt midway through the second half to take a double-figure lead and held off the Spartans down the stretch by hitting nine of 12 free throws in the final 1:15.
Korie Lucious scored 20 points and Draymond Green added 10 of his 16 in the final minute for Michigan State (5-2). The Spartans shot 49 percent, were held to one field goal during a critical 7-minute stretch that coincided with Duke’s run but otherwise hung tight with the reigning national champions.
Duke won its 17th straight game dating to last season’s national title run, claimed its 23rd straight victory at Cameron Indoor Stadium and ran its NCAA-best streak of nonconference wins at home to 81.
Mike Krzyzewski claimed the 875th victory of his Hall of Fame career to move one win behind Adolph Rupp, who’s in third place on the all-time list.
No. 3 Pittsburgh 80, Duquesne 66
Ashton Gibbs scored 22 points and Gary McGhee wore down the smaller Dukes (3-2) with 12 points and 13 rebounds in the first basketball game in the Panthers’ Consol Energy Center.

McGhee had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds for Pittsburgh (8-0) with 51/2 minutes remaining in the first half.

The Red Wolves (1-6) got two quick baskets in the extra period to take a 69-65 lead. But the host Tigers (6-0) scored the next seven points to pull away and escape with its undefeated record intact.

Chase Tapley scored 14 points and keyed a 12-3 run late in the first half that helped lead the undefeated Aztecs (7-0) past the visiting Gaels (6-2). Malcolm Thomas had 12 points and six of SDSU’s 10 blocked shots.
UCF 57, No. 18 Florida 54
Marcus Jordan scored 18 points and Keith Clanton hit two free throws in the final seconds as the host Knights (6-0) upset the Gators (5-2) for the first time in 10 meetings.
Jordan, Michael Jordan’s son, was 6-for-11 from the field. He hit two free throws with 24 seconds remaining to put UCF up 55-52.

Freshman Cory Joseph had 16 points and nine rebounds and the Longhorns (6-1) ran its nonconference home winning streak to 23 straight against the Cardinals (4-3).
Freshman Tristan Thompson had his second consecutive double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds for Texas.
No. 21 BYU 77, Creighton 65
Brandon Davies scored a career-high 24 points to lead four Cougars in double figures in their first true road game.
Jimmer Fredette and Jackson Emery added 13 points apiece and Kyle Collinsworth had 12 points and 10 rebounds for visiting BYU (7-0).
Doug McDermott had 20 points and 12 rebounds to become the first freshman for the Bluejays (4-3) since 1988 to record a double-double.

JuJuan Johnson scored 29 points, and the Boilermakers (6-1) clinched the ACC/Big Ten Challenge for the Big Ten for the second straight season, this time with an overtime win over the host Hokies (4-3).

Sophomore guard Anthony Marshall scored 16 points to help the Rebels (7-0) remain undefeated.
Austin Hill had 15 points to lead the host Redbirds (5-2).

Brian Green scored 14 points and Brady Jardine and Brockeith Pane each had 13 as the Aggies (5-1) beat the host Pioneers (1-6). Pane added nine rebounds for Utah State, which has won four straight and outrebounded Denver 33-17.
