Isle Marine, 26, killed in Afghanistan
The Department of Defense announced yesterday the death in Afghanistan of a Marine from Hawaii.
Sgt. Matthew T. Abbate, 26, of Honolulu died Thursday while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, the Pentagon said.
He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, at Camp Pendleton, Calif.

The Bishop Museum is making information about thousands of Hawaii sites excavated by its archaeologists available to the public through an online database.
The database has details on 12,800 sites.

Archaeology Collections Manager Rowan Gard says the database will allow people to search for information about their community and perhaps even their own back yard.
Gard hopes the site will give people a greater understanding of Hawaii’s past.
A second version of the database will include thousands of artifact images and research manuscripts.
The museum has more than a million artifacts of native Hawaiian and historic Hawaii immigrant life. It is the largest such collection in the world.
New star at Manoa
Effective Jan. 2, the University of Hawaii at Manoa’s Institute for Astronomy will be led by Gunther Hasinger, most recently scientific director at the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics in Garching, Germany. He’s succeeding Rolf-Peter Kudritzki, who will relinquish his post at the end of the year.

Arakawa names 2 staff
Maui Mayor-elect Alan Arakawa has nominated planning consultant William Spence as his new county planning director.
The appointment, which doesn’t require City Council concurrence, was announced Friday.
Spence established his own consulting firm, the William Spence Co., in 2002. Before that, he was lead staff planner for the county for 10 years.
According to Arakawa, Spence has extensive experience working on multi-year, regional projects, and conducting presentations and hearings before public interest groups, citizen committees, planning commissions and the Council.
Arakawa tapped Michele Chouteau McLean to be Spence’s chief deputy. She currently is the deputy director of the Kahoolawe Island Reserve Commission.
