Five big plays from Hawaii’s 59-21 win over UNLV
1. MONIZ TO POLLARD
» Situation: Hawaii 0, UNLV 0, 4:42 remaining, first quarter, Hawaii ball, third and 20 at UNLV 33
» The Play: WR Royce Pollard makes one of the best catches of the season, securing a pass from QB Bryant Moniz in a corner of the end zone as he is falling.
» Impact: Hawaii takes a 7-0 lead and never trails. Pollard catches seven passes for 95 yards. It is the first of four touchdown passes for Moniz, who also rushes for two.
» Pollard: "I had an idea of what the corner was going to do. When the ball is in the air, you don’t think about it, you just do it."
2. FOURTH-DOWN STOP
» Situation: Hawaii 21, UNLV 7, 10:26 remaining, second quarter, UNLV ball, fourth and 3 at Hawaii 44
» The Play: LB Corey Paredes breaks up a pass by QB Omar Clayton intended for WR Michael Johnson.
» Impact: UNLV’s decision to go for the first down instead of punting does not bring success, as the Hawaii defense holds. For the game, UNLV is 4-for-12 on third- and fourth-down conversions. Paredes also gets an interception and a third-down tackle for loss.
» Clayton: "We struggled with our ground game and didn’t want to get to a point where we were playing behind the chains. Our lack of a run game on first and second down really hurt us."
3. TORRES TAKES IT
» Situation: Hawaii 24, UNLV 7, 6:30 remaining, second quarter, UNLV ball, first and 10 at own 27
» The Play: SS Richard Torres intercepts Clayton’s pass at the UNLV 46 and returns it to the 3. A penalty moves the ball to the 1.
» Impact: RB Alex Green scores on the next play. UNLV loses what little momentum it mustered by holding Hawaii to a field goal on its previous possession.
» Torres: "I broke on the ball and started drooling."
4. NEW STANDARD
» Situation: Hawaii 38, UNLV 7, 6:57 remaining, third quarter, UNLV ball, first and 10 at Hawaii 16
» The Play: WR Phillip Payne falls down, and Clayton’s pass is intercepted by FS Mana Silva in the end zone. Silva returns it to the Hawaii 26.
» Impact: Silva had tied Keone Jardine and Kelvin Millhouse for the school career record of 13 interceptions three games ago at Boise State. The record is now his alone. Hawaii intercepted three passes and leads the nation with 23 for the season.
» Silva: "I was very pleased I did it back at home. At New Mexico State I dropped two. It was kind of frustrating, but to finally get it at home was fitting."
5. SENIOR MOMENT
» Situation: Hawaii 38, UNLV 7, 4:17 remaining, third quarter, Hawaii ball, third and goal at UNLV 3
» The Play: Moniz throws a touchdown pass to SB Kealoha Pilares.
» Impact: Pilares scores his 15th touchdown of the season. He finishes with nine catches for 157 yards. In two games against UNLV in the past two seasons, Pilares has 22 catches for 203 yards. Fellow seniors Greg Salas, Alex Green and Jake Heun also score touchdowns
» Hawaii junior left tackle Austin Hansen: "This was for the seniors. This is for the guys who gave five years of their lives, dedicated 100 percent for this program."
